I am the mom of a 12 year old twice exceptional middle schooler. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's 4 1/2 years ago. School is the place where his Asperger's really manifests itself. He has always been in the gifted program. Since his adventure into middle school---life has really gotten let's say "interesting". I look forward to some good feedback from folks who have been there done that.
Welcome! I have to say that my experience with medication issues and children on the higher end of the spectrum is minimal. However, I am aware of many parents who express similar "challenges" when their kids head off to middle school....different teachers, teenage woes etc
Are the teachers aware of his diagnosis and do you feel that they accommodate him appropriately? Does he have an IEP or a 504 Plan? Is there someone in the building that is knowledgable about AS that can assist you? Sometimes, I find that the teachers/realted service providers just have to learn to accommodate/motivate their students on the spectrum. I know this can be a huge feat in the middle school, given the number of teachers he may have. What do his outbursts "look like?"
I wanted to know what experiences people have had when giving children with Asperger's medication to help ease anxiety and keep focused while at school. My son (a gifted 6th grader) has this "school phenomenon" in certain classes (mostly math) where he is out in left field somewhere, claims he hates the class (although he can do it). At home he is not a problem. I want to make sure his outbursts do not get out of hand. I have always been against any medication but since he has hit the teen years and middle school, it is getting tougher. Any help would be appreciated.
